Gleeson to build new homes in Beswick, Manchester

Gleeson Homes has said it will build 289 new homes in the second phase of a development taking place in Beswick, east Manchester.

Situated between Ashton Old Road and Grey Mare Lane, the development will eventually consist of 223 two, three, four and five-bedroom houses and 66 two and three-bedroom apartments.

Some of the ground-floor apartments will double up as retail units.

Meanwhile, Manchester City Council is hoping to build a high-school academy that specialises in the built environment and will include a public library and all-weather sports pitches.

Tom Russell, chief executive of regeneration agency New East Manchester said: "The fundamental objective of the work in east Manchester is to provide a sustainable neighbourhood.

"These two developments will offer high-quality housing, retail, education and community sports facilities will better serve Beswick's rapidly growing population."

East Manchester was the centrepiece of the Commonwealth Games in 2002 and is home to the City of Manchester Stadium.
