Gold award for south-east London homes

Housebuilder Berkeley has received an award for its flagship development in south-east London.

Known as Empire Square, the development won a Gold Standard in the Building for Life awards, its seventh such award in the last six years.

Empire Square, which comprises 572 apartments and penthouses, is built on one of London's largest brownfield sites.

The government-backed award is in recognition of Berkley's commitment to quality design standards and sustainable housebuilding.

Tony Pidgley, managing director, said: "Building for Life's commitment to quality in new housing closely mirrors what we hope to achieve with our own regeneration project.

"Our customers want to live in places that are not only attractive, but also appropriate to their setting and with a genuine and fitting sense of character."

Building for Life hands out awards based on the criteria set out by the government's Sustainable Communities Plan, which is intended to encourage housebuilders to build sustainable development for life in the 21st century.
