Design quality is being "lost in translation" between architects and housebuilders, it has been claimed.
Speaking at the Building for Life Awards, designer Wayne Hemingway said that the two professions need to work more closely.
He said that unless both sides drop stereotypes about each other, the UK will never get the quality of housing it deserves.
"Most housebuilders seem to think that good design takes longer and costs more - and they're under pressure on both fronts," he said.
"Architects, for their part, believe most developers have little appreciation of what good design is and what it can offer."
Mr Hemingway is chairman of the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment, which is calling for builders and architects to join the Building for Life awards, which sets high-design standards for housebuilders and housing associations.
The closing date is February 29th.
