Manchester is one of the most expensive university cities in the UK when it comes to accommodation, according to the HSBC.
The HSBC report revealed that an undergraduate's biggest expense is lodgings, especially now that rent is going up in response to rising house prices.
This may prompt worried parents to invest in an apartment for their undergraduate children in or close to the city centre rather than paying rent for halls or sub-standard off-campus accommodation.
A spokeswoman for HSBC said that students could expect to pay upwards of £100 a week for a room in a shared house.
Property developer Dandara is offering city-centre flats at its Spectrum development on Blackfriars Road, close to Harvey Nichols and Selfridges.
The scheme comprises 580 studio, one and two-bedroom apartments, with prices starting at £114,950.
"Spectrum is ideally situated for Manchester's vibrant student population," states Dandara.
