Wimpey to cover stamp duty

Housing developer George Wimpey has provided would-be homebuyers with an opportunity to acquire a home at no stamp duty cost.

The builder has said buyers of its homes in the midlands can enjoy a lower cost as the tax is paid for them.

Daniel McGowan, the sales and marketing director for George Wimpey North Midlands, explained that the move has been taken in view of the uncertainty over whether or not the government will announce a stamp duty suspension in its November pre-budget statement.

He said: "The government is considering plans to delay the payment of stamp duty, but this could take months to come into effect and savvy buyers are looking for a great deal now."

Reflecting on the stamp duty situation, Simon Preston, chairman of iammoving.com, said the uncertainty about the government's intentions has created much "anxiety" and is likely to dissuade some from buying a home in the meantime.
