Barnsley - a town in South Yorkshire - has seen a surge in popularity of late due to its excellent location. The cities of Sheffield and Leeds are within easy reach by either car or train, making it an ideal place for commuters to settle in. Although its industrial heritage still remains, property developers are seeing the potential in the area and making use of all it has to offer.
Homebuy Direct
To make moving to the town easier and more affordable, there are a couple of developments currently offering the government's Homebuy Direct scheme. Aimed at key workers and low-income families, the scheme allows qualifying applicants to benefit from paying just 70 per cent of the property's value. The remaining amount is paid over a 25-year period or when the property is transferred to another owner, giving a means of helping people on to the property ladder. It initially set out to help 180,000 first-time buyers, with the chancellor pledging yet more funding to the scheme at the last Budget.
Barratt Homes is currently offering the Homebuy Direct initiative on its properties on Hoyle Grange and showhomes are available for keen property hunters to take a look at. The development boasts a selection of three and four-bedroom homes, which start from just £134,995. At the moment, Barratt is offering fitted carpets for would-be homeowners, giving more of an incentive to relocate to Barnsley.
Another option for people moving to the town is Scholars Gate, another Barratt Homes development offering two, three and four-bedroom homes. They are on the market for as little as £112,995, which could be made much more affordable through the Homebuy Direct scheme.
Mortgage paid
Those contemplating a move to Barnsley may also be interested in the mortgage paid scheme offered by Smart New Homes. It protects the homeowner and their mortgage should a property owner be made redundant, reducing the level of financial stress associated with losing a job. It will make sure that payments are made over a 24-month period, or until the homeowner finds another job.
Keepmoat Homes has two of its developments offering this deal at the moment. Cypress Road in Kendray is one of them, which is great for those in search of two and three-bedroom properties in Barnsley. The other choice is Allegro Court in Grimethorpe, which is said to be one of the town's more up and coming areas.
