Portugal's appeal as a summer holiday destination is filtering through into the market for overseas property for sale, with one estate agent reporting a ten-fold increase in viewings for December.

Infinito Real said the surge in visitors to Portugal in the summer has had a positive impact on property for sale in the country, with bookings in November three times the number seen in 2010.

Some figures suggest visitor numbers were up by as much as 45 per cent this summer. According to figures from the Office for National Statistics, around 1.6 million Brits visit Portugal every year.

Managing director Stephen Anderson said October and November are traditionally busy periods as people look to escape the gloom of the UK, but December, which this year has seen a ten-fold increase, is usually much quieter.

Mr Anderson said the main concern for many investors is securing a property to let which will bring in a strong rental income.

"The success of these bookings over the next month will be influential for the forthcoming year and should start to give us a good indication of what we can expect from the market in 2012," he added.
