Planning consent has finally been awarded by the Italian government for the construction of a new €4bn (£3.18bn) bridge which will link Sicily with mainland Italy.

President Silvio Berlusconi, who was re-elected last month, will reignite the idea, which was first conjured up in 2001, but abandoned by Italy’s outgoing centre-left government.

A consortium led by Italy’s largest developer Impregilo will reportedly build the suspension bridge, which is widely expected to become the largest in the world. The bridge is expected to take between 5 and 10 years to construct.

Tourism in Sicily, buoyed by the introduction of a growing number of low-cost airlines, is currently growing at a rapid rate. This in turn has boosted demand for Sicilian property to both buy and rent.

Some of the most popular places to currently buy property in Sicily include Taorimina, Catania, Palermo and Mount Etna. However, Homesoverseas.co.uk understands that there are a number of fast emerging areas, such as Ragusa, Comiso Siracusa and Sciacca in the south-east of the island, where new motorways and an international airport are close to completion. It’s reportedly still possible to buy a small apartment from around £40,000 in these areas.
Golf enthusiasts may be keen to learn that a nearby €129m (£103m) hotel and golf resort is currently being constructed in the southeastern village of Verdura.
