Cooper, Drew, Eijkman and Fleming wings are four new apartment buildings comprising an outstanding collection of high specification one and two bedroom apartments.
The buildings are located in what were the grounds of the former Ophthalmic and Aural Hospital, and are arranged around The Old Hospital’s new garden square.
Externally, the architecture is clean and contemporary, combining materials such as brick, glass, ragstone and lead. Inside, each apartment has been intelligently designed to optimise the space and features a contemporary style specification. Many of the apartments have outside private space, in the shape of a balcony, private garden or terrace.
All of the newly built apartments at The Old Hospital reflect Higgins Homes’ commitment to the environment by achieving Level 3 of The Code for Sustainable Homes. This embraces a range of measures including energy efficient C02 emissions, recycling, environmental impact, waste disposal, build management and the ecology of the site. The apartments contained within all four wings consequently offer clever, contemporary style eco-friendly design in an unbeatable, Maidstone town centre location.
The Area
Kent’s historic county town offers a wealth of amenities, all of which are readily accessible from The Old Hospital. Located on Church Street, in Maidstone town centre, a wide range of shops, bars and restaurants are within easy walking distance using an extensive network of pedestrian walk ways. Other attractions accessible on foot include the Hazlitt Theatre and The Exchange (a hall for concerts and performances).
Maidstone’s many green spaces include the nearby Brenchley Gardens and the Maidstone Millennium River Park, with 10km of paths and footbridges along the River Medway. The latter also boasts the Riverstage Arena, an outside entertainment venue made famous a few years ago for hosting Madonna.
Nearby bus stops can be found at The Chequer Centre off King Street, south of the development. From here 27 buses per hour at peak times operate to destinations throughout the Medway area.
For those who prefer pedal power, a good cycle network surrounds The Old Hospital, which can be accessed from Union Street, directly north of the development. Cycle and motorcycle storage facilities are available, whilst residents who need to use a car only occasionally can take advantage of a car club. A pool car provided by Street Car# will be based in an allocated bay on site.
London is easily commutable from Maidstone East station, less than 500 metres from The Old Hospital. Regular services operate into London Victoria from just 56 minutes travelling time. Direct services also operate to Ashford International (29 minutes), making the rest of Europe equally accessible.
