Mortimer is a very friendly community and its amenities include a bank, fire station, community police station, doctors surgery, dentist, post office, two schools, chemist, library, four churches and several other local facilities, including McCalls newsagents, a Chinese take-away, and The Cinnamon Tree Indian Restaurant. The Budgens supermarket now organises the annual ‘fun run’ a 10 kilometer race around the village which generally happens on the last Sunday of September. There are three excellent public houses in the village, The Victoria Arms, The Turners Arms and the Horse and Groom, all offering a fine choice of ales, wines and good tasty food. Mortimer also has several football teams, tennis clubs and a successful amateur cricket club. The Community Centre, completed in the autumn of 2009, is used as a cricket pavilion.
Shoppers are spoiled for choice – just a 9 mile drive away is the bustling town of Reading, home to the Oracle, the region’s premier shopping centre with over ninety top name shops, numerous riverside restaurants, bars, cafes and a 10-screen cinema.
Further afield, Basingstoke’s Festival Place is a good shopping destination with no less than 200 shops and plenty of restaurants, cafes and bars. Newbury, which has a pedestrianised town centre, has a Market Day every Thursday and Saturday. They all have something for everyone where you can find just about anything you need!
There are plenty of interesting places to visit and see in the area such as Wellington Country Park, set in 350 acres of parkland providing scenic nature trails, lakeside walks and picnic and bbq areas, making it ideal for all the family. Places of historic interest include the ruins of England’s last castle at Basing House, the excavated site of the Roman town Calleva Atrebatum and Stratfield Saye House, home to the Dukes of Wellington since 1817. Also, The Vyne, a National Trust 16th century house which boasts an eclectic mix of furniture, portraits and sculptures, and is also host to a variety of open air events.
For those of a sporting nature there is Newbury Racecourse, one of the finest sporting venues in the UK offering both flat and jump racing. Nearby Wokefield Park and Golf Club is set in 250 acres of Berkshire countryside providing an ideal setting for a variety of events and includes an 18-hole championship golf course. Extensive on-site leisure facilities include a 16 metre indoor pool, sauna and gymnasium.
Juniper Gardens not only has the benefit of being in a scenic rural location, it is also conveniently situated to the A33 which leads directly to both the M4 and M3 motorways. Mortimer station has services to Basingstoke, Reading and Paddington, which from Reading Station takes approximately 30 minutes.
