Appearing in the Domesday Book of 1086 at Webrige and Webruge its early history was of a small village with a river crossing – that was until Henry VIII made it fashionable by building a palace here for his 4th wife Ann of Cleves and where, rumour has it, he married his 5th wife, Katherine Howard, in the chapel.
