York's city centre which is only a short walk away is very compact, which is ideal for shopping.

York combines all the usual top high street stores, with smaller independent shops, catering for everybody's tastes and needs. The Shambles is particularly good for these smaller independent shops. 

The city market lies between The Shambles and Parliament Street and contains 120 stalls within a pedestrianised area.

Out of town shopping centres
There are three out-of town shopping centres on the outskirts of York.

At Monks Cross you will find Asda and Sainsbury's supermarkets alongside many other high street stores. McArthur Glen Designer Outlet  offers designer-label clothing at reduced prices. Finally at Clifton Moor you'll find a range of shops, including a Tesco, along with a 12 screen multiplex cinema and a selection of restaurants.

SCHOOLS
The area offers a host of educational facilities ranging from infants to seniors.

TRANSPORT
Getting around York
York is a relatively small city and is very easy to get around whichever method of transport you decide to use.

Walking
York city centre is small enough to get around on foot and because the central area is for pedestrians only, there's no traffic to worry about.

Cycling
York is the UK's top cycling city, with 15% of York residents, compared to 3% nationally, travelling to work by bike. This is partly due to the fact that York is so cycle-friendly, with dozens of cycle paths and lots of central places to lock up your bike. The fact that you can easily get around the city on a bike could save you hundreds of pounds on public transport.

Buses
A comprehensive bus service operates in and around the City of York.

Driving
Due to its proximity to motorways (M62 and M1) and the fact that several main A roads pass through the city centre, York is easily reached by car. On arrival into the city of York there are several, well signposted, car parks.
