The village offers a few stores including a grocery shop and post office, a couple of local pubs and two churches including the lovely Norman Church of St Leonard, the oldest building in Bengeo.

A mile south of Bengeo is the county town of Hertford, a small and picturesque market town full of charismatic charm. Shopping is well catered for with some of the larger chains represented including Boots, M&S, Waitrose and Monsoon, but unlike many of its neighbours, the town is full of interesting independent retailers, many occupying the beautifully preserved historic buildings.

There is also a shopping centre and a monthly farmer’s market selling seasonal local produce. There are plenty of restaurants and café-bars offering traditional British fare, Indian, French or Thai and a good selection of real ale pubs. Hertford also boasts its own theatre, museum and castle.
