Altrincham was established as a market town in 1290, and there is still a market in the town today.  In 1974, the town became part of the newly formed Metropolitan Borough of Trafford in Greater Manchester.  Today, it has a strong middle class presence and a reputation as an affluent commuter town, partly due to its excellent transport links.  The train station and metro link allow easy access into Manchester city centre, Manchester Airport, and beyond, and there are good bus links in the area with regular services to neighbouring suburbs such as Sale; Bowden and Hale.

There are plenty of sports and social clubs in Altrincham, as well as more famous places to visit, such as the Garrick Theatre, or Dunham Massey, the early Georgian National Trust property which is situated in superb grounds with its own deer park less than 2 miles away.  Annual festivities include the Royal Ale Festival in April, and nearby Knutsford Royal May Day.
