The historic town of Battle was built and named after the Battle of Hastings when in 1066 William the Conqueror led the Norman invasion defeating King Harold and his Saxon army. The battle was decided when King Harold was shot in the eye with an arrow. At the place where he fell it was decreed that an abbey should be built. Also set on the battlefield is the 12th century church of St Mary the Virgin with its magnificent Romanesque nave, rare 14th century wall paintings and stunning Senlac commemorative stained glass windows. The town of Battle grew up around the Abbey, which still stands today, marking the centre of the town with its history dating back nearly 1,000 years.
