Insurance 'the most important thing' for new homes, expert warnsHomebuyers have a lot to arrange when moving into their new home – but insurance is one of the most important things to organise, an expert has suggested.
An appropriate insurance policy that protects against major risks is a must, according to the British Insurance Brokers' Association (BIBA).
The association claims that 75 per cent of households do not purchase home contentant insurance, putting their belongings at risk.
When it comes to insuring a new home, there are several "principle areas" that need to be included, advises Greaeme Trudgill, head of corporate affairs at BIBA.
He explained: "The most important thing is to buy the basic cover and then a standard cover which is for fire, theft, storm damage or a flood."
Home insurance providers can help customers determine which other areas of cover might be needed, he added.
With the summer fast approaching, BIBA recently warned homeowners to ensure their garden furniture is covered by their home insurance.
The association said to check that expensive items such as patio heaters were covered and if any policy restrictions apply to items.
