Newhall is a growing community, the brain child of Jon & William Moen who, together with the rest of their extend family, are leading the development of some 2800 homes adjacent to Old Harlow.

The masterplan for Newhall was designed by Roger Evans Associates. A masterplan was essential because Newhall will grow to a community of some scale. Roger Evans began by superimposing street plans of Venice, Bath, Oxford and other historic towns onto a plan of the Newhall site. As successful high-density towns, admired for centuries, what lessons could be learnt for Newhall? We love visiting these places so we wanted to create a new place, taking inspiration from them, that people would love to visit – and live in. This comparison helped to reveal where densities could be highest, and where the large amounts of green space (40% of the area) would naturally be sited.

Architecture is always evolutionary. The great European cities designed in previous centuries, from Amsterdam to Venice, still pass on principles and ideas that inspire the architects of our time.

Designs by Richard Murphy, ECD and ORMS together with REA will complement one another and form an interesting and exciting new phase.
