From the little things, like knowing the nearest place to pick up a pint of milk, to more important matters like finding the right school or having a health centre nearby, you need to know that the community you’re moving to will support you and your family, as well as be a pleasant place to live. So here’s some useful information about the area around Victoria Gardens.

Transport

Altofts and Normanton have excellent transport links. Normanton Railway Station, around ten minutes walk from Greenfield Road, provides regular services to Leeds, a journey of less than half an hour, as well as Wakefield, Barnsley and Sheffield. It is approximately a mile and a half to junction 31 of the M62, and the intersection with the M1 is less than ten miles away. Local bus services, connecting with centres like Wakefield, Castleford and Pontefract as well as Normanton town centre, stop less than 100 yards from the end of Greenfield Road.

Shopping

Village shops in Altofts include a post office, a pharmacist, newsagent, off-licence, and butcher’s in Lee Brig, a short walk from Greenfield Road. There are more services in Church Road, including a delicatessen and a convenience store. Normanton town centre is a popular shopping area, with a wide choice of local traders and high street names. It also has a traditional market place, just half a mile from Greenfield Road, with shops and, on Tuesdays and Saturdays, stalls selling goods ranging from clothing and tools to fresh local produce. In addition, the bustling city centre of Wakefield is just five miles away from Altofts.

Leisure & Recreation

Altofts Community Sports Club offers a range of activities and a swimming pool is located close to the development in Market Street. Normanton Golf Club has an excellent 18-hole course and clubhouse facilities just two and a half miles away. There is also a good choice of restaurants, cafés and traditional pubs within easy reach.

Education

There are two infant schools in Altofts, both within a short walk of the development, and both assessed as outstanding in their most recent Ofsted reports. From the infant schools, children move on to Altofts Junior School which is adjacent to the Greenfield Road development and caters for children ages 7 to 11. The local secondary school is Freeston Academy in Normanton, around a mile from Greenfield Road.

Health Care

King’s Medical Practice in Normanton is a large surgery, and there are three other smaller practices within a few minutes walk, including one at Patience Lane in Altofts. King’s Medical Centre also incorporates a dental surgery, and there is a second dental practice in Normanton High Street. The pharmacy in Lee Brig is just quarter of a mile from Greenfield Road.

Directions

From the M62

Leave the M62 at junction 31 following signs for the A655 and Normanton town centre, to join Castleford Road. After around three quarters of a mile, at the traffic lights with the Black Swan pub on the right, turn right into the High Street. Follow the High Street round to the T-junction with the pedestrianised area ahead, and turn right into King Edward Street. At the next T-junction turn right into Altofts Road and after just over quarter of a mile turn left into Greenfields Road. The development is on the left.
