This picturesque village lies five miles to the east of Maidstone and is surrounded by beautiful countryside. It retains its rural charm with its traditional Kentish architecture, village shops, friendly pubs and oasthouses, facing a large village green. The cricket ground, one of the oldest in Kent, has secured its place in history, as it was here that overarm bowling was pioneered, and sitting above the village stands the historic Holy Cross Church, with its Saxon stonework and distinctive gargoyles.
As you’d expect from the Garden of England the countryside surrounding Bearsted is spectacular with rolling hills, historic castles and country lanes waiting to be explored. Both the ancient Pilgrims Way and the North Downs Way are close by. Other local delights include Leeds Castle, just three miles from Bearsted, set in 500 acres of beautiful parkland and described as ‘the loveliest castle in the world’.
The area has good schooling – both state and private – for all ages, including Invicta Grammar School and St John’s Church of England Primary School. Bearsted also benefits from excellent transport links. The village lies between Maidstone and Ashford and has road and rail links with both. The A20 passes through the village and junction 7 of the M20 is just a mile to the west. Bearsted’s mainline railway station connects you with the capital – London Victoria – in little over an hour,* whilst the Channel Tunnel, just over 30 miles away, enables you to be in France in less than two hours.
No description of Bearsted could be complete without mentioning neighbouring Maidstone. Located on the banks of the picturesque River Medway, Kent’s County Town has much to offer. It is a great place to shop – wander through its historic streets or visit one of the many shopping centres such as Fremlin Walk and you’ll find speciality boutiques alongside all the usual high street names.
Shopping, however, is only half the story as the town has a wealth of historical attractions. It is also the place for an exciting evening out with its many restaurants, wine bars, cinema and the popular Hazlitt Theatre.
Alternatively take a stroll along the Maidstone Millennium River Park which weaves its way along a 10km stretch of the River Medway. At its heart lies a new recreational area - Whatman Park with treetop walks, nature reserves, adventure playgrounds and the Riverstage Arena.
