Initially known as the Southern Development Area, Wichelstowe is a carefully planned, sustainable urban extension to the town of Swindon.

Located to the north of the M4 between Junction 16 and Croft Road it comprises three distinct neighbourhoods: East Wichel (formerly South Leaze), Middle Wichel (formerly West Leaze) and West Wichel (formerly Westlecott Village).

Wichelstowe was chosen as a name - and indeed an ongoing identity - for the area after extensive local research, consultation with residents' associations, parish councils and Swindon Borough Councillors. The word Wichel is rooted in the history of Swindon and was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086. Stowe is an Old English word meaning a meeting place.

Plans for Wichelstowe include:
* Up to 4,500 new homes
* New schools for local children
* Employment space
* Community facilities and places of worship
* Playing fields
* Retail and commercial units
* A country park covering approximately 205 acres of this 764 acre site
* A 4.5 kilometre extension to the Wiltshire and Berkshire canal

Overall, nearly 50% of the site will remain 'green', including the country park, playing fields and other open space.

From the M4 Junction 15:

At the roundabout take the first exit onto A419, then take the first exit off the A419 signposted Swindon A4259. Continue on the A4259 until you reach a roundabout, take the first exit onto B4006, continue until mini roundabout taking the first exit (straight across) and at the next roundabout take the first exit signposted B4006 Wroughton and at the next roundabout take second exit and continue until you reach the traffic lights at junction of Croft Road. Turn left and take immediate right at the next set of lights where you will find the Marketing Suite.

From Old Town:

Proceed towards Wroughton on Croft Road, proceed straight ahead at the first set of traffic lights, at the second set of lights turn right into Wichelstowe where you will find the Marketing Suite.
