Humberstone: one of the earliest garden suburbs
Just three miles from the city centre, Humberstone is a suburb of Leicester with its own intriguing story. In the first decade of the twentieth century, when it was still a small village, workers at the Anchor Boot & Shoe Cooperative Society pooled their resources to buy land and a self-contained, self-financed community of homes, with sports facilities, a church and a shop. They were inspired by the ideals of the Garden City movement, and adopted the charming motto, 'Not greater wealth, but simpler pleasures'. By 1914, ninety-four gabled cottages had been built and today are part of the Old Humberstone Conservation Area.
Lifestyle
The city and its surroundings
Leicester is one of the premier cities of the Midlands and its many attractions are just three miles from Albermarle Park. Shopping is focused on The Shires, The Haymarket and St Martins Square, where stores include Fenwicks, Rackhams and Debenhams. There are plenty of more unusual, smaller shops in the Leicester Lanes area.
There is an excellent range of cafes, bars and restaurants, including many to delight connoisseurs of Asian food. Live entertainment venues include the Haymarket Theatre, De Montfort Hall, and Jongleurs. The magnificent new Performing Arts Theatre, costing well over £50 million, is due to open this year and will be an extremely prestigious addition to the city's cultural life. And for family fun, it's hard to beat the National Space Centre, or the dinosaurs at New Walk Museum.
Historic Leicester can be discovered in the Castle Park neighbourhood, an area of ancient buildings and riverside walks, and the location for Leicester Castle and Guildpark.
Leicester is also fortunate in having some of the Midlands' most attractive countryside on its doorstep. There are affluent market towns like Oakham, Uppingham and Market Harborough with exclusive shops and restaurants to try. Rutland Water, to the east of the city, is a favourite spot for fishing, and there's an open-air theatre at Tolthorpe Park. For children, favourite outings always include Wistow Maize Maze, or an afternoon visiting the lambs and piglets at Halstead House Farm.
