Consett has an industrial past. Perched on a steep bank to the east of the river Derwent, the town had a strong economy fuelled by lead mining and the production of iron and steel.

In 1841 it had a small population of just 145 people, but as timed passed, new businesses formed and new housing was introduced. The area now has approximately 27,000 residents.
