The freshwater pond is part of the Rainton Meadows Nature Reserve and is home to an impressive 140 species of birds. No one visiting the area for the first time can fail to be impressed by the sign of the Penshaw Monument, which dominates the skyline above the entrance to the Herrington Country Park.

The nearest city is modern, lively Sunderland set in a rolling green landscape and dazzling coastal scenery. The city presents a variety of activities to indulge in from its popular galleries, museums and theatres to its rapidly expanding retail sector.

Outdoors you can stroll along wide stretches of beaches at Roker and Seaburn, leaving you relaxed and refreshed. Perhaps visit the Winter Gardens, rebuilt on site of the original Victorian glass houses. Consisting of a tropical rainforest thick with palms, three ferns, bananas and citrus trees.

Further afield take on the many winding paths through the fantastic Northumberland Countryside. Paddle at a sunny spot along the sparking expanse of the North East spectacular shoreline. Hadrian’s Wall is a sight not to neglect, it’s ancient barricade stretching from coast to coast or experience the breathtaking Lumley Castle, which towers over the River Wear. Maybe even watch a test match or Twenty20 cricket at The Riverside, home of Durham CCC.
