History in the making…
Chippenham lies on the River Avon and the route of the Great Western Railway and is famed for its massive railway arches and abundance of historic buildings, built in the time of Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The town’s name is derived from a Saxon man called Cyppa and the word Hamme; meaning a settlement enclosed by river, hence Cyppa’s Hamme. Chippenham is now a lively market town brimming with history and character, offering excellent local conveniences for modern day living.
Retail therapy on tap…
The town centre is within walking distance of Cocklebury Road and offers a variety of well-known shops in the pedestrianised High Street. The stylish Emery Gate and Borough Parade shopping centres are a shoppers paradise, whilst there are a wealth of independent shops intermixed with street cafes and patisseries. A vibrant market is held twice a week and the regular Wiltshire Farmers Market offers fresh local produce to complement your new ‘Eco’ lifestyle. Furthermore, there is even more choice in the retail park located on the north side of the town off Cepen Way, that includes a Sainsburys supermarket, as well as the Hathaway retail park next to the rail station.
Time for friends and family…
For those who like to socialise, there is so much to do. Traditional pubs vie with more modern bars and clubs, whilst further entertainment can be found at the Astoria cinema. If eating out is your preference, there are a host of restaurants and pubs offering cuisine from across the globe including the popular Revolutions and The Angel Inn, a former coaching inn, now an elegant gastro pub.
Looking after your wellbeing…
Whether you prefer a long rally on the all weather tennis courts, a quick dip in the pool of a local leisure centre or a round of golf within any number of established courses, Chippenham has something for everyone. There is also parkland in which to unwind such as Hardenhuish Park and numerous recreation grounds in which to walk the dog or take the children to play.
Back to the roots…
The warm community feel of Chippenham is evident from the amount of festivities held throughout the town’s calendar. They include the North Wiltshire Festival, a Folk and Arts Festival, children’s fun days and well contested fishing competitions on the river.
Great schooling...
Chippenham is regarded very highly for its standard of education, which includes 3 secondary schools and Wiltshire College on Cocklebury Road, nominated one of England’s top colleges by Ofsted in 2003. Hardenhuish, a comprehensive secondary school, has been awarded specialist status for maths and came within the top 100 in the latest Guardian newspaper league table. In 2006 Sheldon school achieved the best ever A Level results for a comprehensive school in Wiltshire and came within the top 25 of the league table. In fact it has been highlighted as one of the best schools in England no less than 3 times by top government inspectors and recognised as a specialist in science. There is a wide selection of primary schools within close proximity and an independent school, taking children from 2 to 16, with 100% of pupils scoring A-C grades in Maths and 94% achieving AC grades in English in 2005*.
