"Moving into Poppy Court was like joining a new family," said Mary Forsdike, the first resident at McCarthy & Stone's new Assisted Living development in Boldmere.

  • Mary Forsdike, 84, moved to Boldmere after spending 25 years living in Buxton, Derbyshire. And as soon as she had her first meal at Poppy Court, she knew she had made the right decision

"When my daughter Stella suggested I moved to be closer to her, I was shocked about the prospect of leaving my home and friends, but my opinions soon changed when I visited Poppy Court. I was delighted by the level of support offered and the standard of the accommodation that was available.

"On the day I arrived, the staff at Poppy Court welcomed me with open arms and made me feel so welcome. At first it felt strange being the first resident in the building. However, I quite enjoyed having the run of the place and having my own personal chef."

Forsdike's move to Poppy Court has not only changed her life, it's changed her daughter Stella's too.

She said: "Mum was living alone and was becoming unable to manage by herself. My brothers and sisters work full time and live at least one hour's drive away, so it was becoming difficult for us to be with her when she needed us.

"As soon as we heard about the new McCarthy & Stone development being built in Boldmere, we jumped at the chance to investigate and we haven't looked back since. Mum knew straight away that Buxton couldn't provide the level of care being offered at Poppy Court. She loved the idea of owning her own home with 24 hour emergency points and having a restaurant open seven days a week just down her corridor.

"We used Moving Experience to help mum move which took a lot of pressure off us. We didn't have to lift a finger as they dealt with our estate agents, solicitors and even packed mum's entire house. They were fantastic and the move went like a dream.

"Having mum close by has taken a huge worry from our lives. I can now see her several times a day and she has the comfort of knowing we can be with her in minutes in an emergency. Both my mum and I are really impressed with the friendliness of all the staff and residents at Poppy Court, and mum really feels like she's gained a new family."

Each McCarthy & Stone apartment includes features such as 24 hour emergency call points, electrical sockets at a raised height to reduce bending, easy grip lever taps, double glazing, energy efficient heating, CCTV and door entry systems and a lift to all floors. There is also a residents' lounge, guest suite and laundry room at each development.

In addition to all of the standard features, the Assisted Living apartments at Poppy Court are fully wheelchair accessible and benefit from level access wardrobes, a level access shower and separate bath with grab rails, slip resistant vinyl flooring and an electrically operated kitchen window. An estates manager, 24 hour on-site staff and waitress service restaurant are available.

Furthermore, residents will be able to benefit from an hour of domestic assistance each week as part of their service charge, whether that's help with chores or getting the weekly shop in, and personal care assistance can also be organised for those individuals who require it, at an additional cost.
